The Kieselguhr
Diatomaceous earth also called kieselguhr is a sedimentary rock composed of very sharp microscopic marine algae fossils. This earth (powder) is extracted from quarries.
Kieselguhr is soft and light due to its high porosity, it is composed of inert, non-calcined natural diatomite thermally stable, non-toxic.
Kieselguhr is used primarily in agriculture, animal feed, soil improvers, rubber and plastics as a filler.

Applications of Kieselguhr
Kieselguhr, also known as diatomaceous earth, has a wide range of applications due to its porous, absorbent, and abrasive nature. It is extensively used as a filtering agent in industries such as water treatment, brewing, pharmaceuticals, and sugar refining, where it helps remove fine particles from liquids. Due to its excellent thermal insulation properties, it is also used to line high-temperature equipment like furnaces and boilers. Kieselguhr’s mild abrasive quality makes it suitable for use in products like toothpaste, polishes, and facial scrubs. In agriculture and pest control, it serves as a natural insecticide, as its sharp microscopic particles damage the exoskeletons of insects, causing them to dehydrate. It also acts as an absorbent material in cleaning products, cat litter, and spill kits. One of its historical applications includes its role in the manufacture of dynamite, where it is used to stabilize nitroglycerin. Additionally, kieselguhr is used as a filler in paints, rubber, and plastics to improve texture and reduce production costs. In food industries, food-grade kieselguhr functions as an anti-caking agent and is sometimes added to animal feed to improve digestion. It also finds use in laboratories and cosmetics, making it a highly versatile material across multiple domains.
